It is an honor and a pleasure to be listing this breath-taking, fabulous, rare, Samuel Winston by Roxane gown!
This late 1950's gown (so, slightly post-Charles James designs for the company) is truly a spectacular, museum-quality gem. The ivory colored crepe silk base of this dress is layered over in a silk chiffon that's heavily hand-beaded, with glass bugle beads, in squiggling bands of alternating silver and gold. These gold bands feature gold seed beads fringe loop droplets, seed bead leaves, flower buds with aurora borealis bead centers and oblong metallic gold bead petals. The overall beading on this dress was excellent when found. I have replaced two small areas of missing beading and secured any loose spots. Back of dress has low-cut scoop and metal zipper closure at center back, with two sets of hook and eye. Interior waist of dress features an elastic banding with its own hook and eye closure -giving an ease to zipping along waist! Ivory label with 'Samuel Winston by Roxane' found in lower skirt, center back. Overall condition is excellent, near mint with the above mentioned repair, one repair to fabric at underarm, stains at underarm and slight soiling to lining around straps. I should also mention that there is a cluster of gold beads that seem out of place in the beading design and are slightly darker gold (near neckline, see first detail pic). When I peeked underneath I found a light rust-colored stain, so perhaps these beads were placed to cover it. I did steam clean and spot-treat this gown but did not dry clean because; a. I was too nervous to trust a dry cleaner with such a piece and b. I did not want to assume the future owner would need/want it dry cleaned (all other items I sell HAVE been cleaned, unless otherwise noted). Please note: there is also an extra 4" of beaded fabric to let the hem out with.
