From small NYC boutique hat designer KOKIN...
Hats had their big comeback during the late 1980's to early 1990's, and many historical fashion trends could be seen in the designs from this time. Hat designer KOKIN was especially prominent and many of his designs can be seen in film and television -including both versions of Clueless! In 1991 and 1992 he was voted Millinery Designer of the Year. He has also been a lead retailer for The Kentucky Derby, usually exhibiting in a pop-up shop at Louiseville's downtown Seelbach Hotel.
This gem is made from a heavy weight wool felt in black, with a contrasting brown color underside. It has a bit of a 1920's-30's bowler style hat feel, but with a wider curled brim, and some feminine details. The hat's brim is more prominently curled upward at the front section and the brim is edged with a woven checked ribbon trim -subtle yet elegant. The overall condition is excellent, with three small areas of moth damage to the underside of brim and very slight misshapen brim but I do believe the asymmetry of the brim is actually also purposeful (see photos for full details). Label reads 'Kōkin' and the hat body is marked 'Made in U.S.A., 100% wool' under the crown.
Measurements:
